Timothy Mlambo
Born: 1964, Ngwavuma, KwaZulu- Natal
Timothy Mlambo is a talented sculptor of 41 years who lives in a remote area of Mangusi, KwaZulu Natal. He carves his sculptures out of the leafberry tree (tapura fisheri) umPengende in Zulu. The form is painted in detailed decorative patterns to suit the piece. The content of the sculptures are animals, insects, birds sitting in trees, or flowers. Sometimes they have a whimsical humour, others tell of folk stories or events.
Timothy is The African Art Centre Artist of the Year 2005
Timothy began carving wood while working as a cane-cutter in Gingingdlovu, Natal. He was encouraged by Peter Engblom to make sculpture. Timothy taught his brothers Themba and Bongani Khumalo and they have been very successful in working together. Timothy has now taught many other people such as Widus Mtshali and Sibusiso Gumede, Dingumuzi Gumede, June Mpontshane, Bongani Msweli and Samson Khumalo to carve in wood and they have developed their own styles.
