Clive Sithole
Clive Sithole has reached new levels of maturity in his ceramic work within the past few years. Using the theme of izimpondo, the horns of cattle, and isigqiki, headrests, as visual tropes, Sithole has created a sense of continuity and development as he experiments with surface treatments and the seemingly infinite variety of neck shapes in his uphiso-inspired works. He constantly innovates technically, reads every book he can find on ceramic arts, and is a member or board member of many local and national arts organizations. Sithole’s non-representational allusions to concepts of cattle as a grounding and spiritually significant theme are a testament to his deep respect for and interest in Zulu cosmology. This imagery offers Sithole a way to tie masculine concepts into a historically women’s art form.
The South African art world looks forward to seeing the innovations and artistic revitalization that are sure to come of Sithole’s current participation in a degree programme at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg. Sithole’s work has been collected regionally, nationally and internationally; he has taught in the U.K. and Ghana; and he is part of new community of a trans-nationally connected artists who have their roots in KwaZulu-Natal. Yet, Sithole consistently reasserts his respect for, roots in, and experimental engagement with women’s rural ceramic traditions. Clive Sithole artworks are currently part of the national Arts High School Curriculum
