Education
The African Art Centre actively encourages access to South African art and craft for all citizens and strives to inform and educate the public about South Africa’s diverse cultural heritage by means of exhibitions, guided tours and special projects. We host and coordinate a variety of development programmes in art and craft in an attempt to develop and extend artistic talent and skills within the rural and urban communities of KwaZulu-Natal and to promote lasting cultural enrichment.
We offer
:
·
Guided tours of temporary exhibitions and the shop for the general public and school groups.
Bookings are essential.
·
Resource material is readily available from our reference library which offers
teachers, learners and the public a comprehensive collection of art and craft books. To make use of the library contact the Development Officer at the African Art Centre.
We provide art classes for the VELOBALA GROUP, an AF
RICAN ART CENTRE DEVELOPMENT PROJECT which has been running consecutively since 1994. One of the objectives of this
grassroots project is to provide significant training and instruction to young students in order to ready them for tertiary education in the arts
We encourage young people to explore different fine art mediums of drawing, painting, printmaking, mosaics and jewellery making and introduce participants to the wonderful world of art making.
The classes take place on Saturdays between 09h00 and 14h00 at the premises of the Department of Fine Art at the Durban University of Technology and are coordinated by Development Officer at the African Art Centre, Nozipho Zulu. Classes are presented by lecturers, artists or 4th year fine art students from the Durban University of Technology and other Fine Art graduates.
At the end of each year, an exhibition of artworks by students who were motivated and hardworking throughout the year is mounted at the African Art Centre. Each student is given an individual assessment by their lecturers and the Director of The African Art Centre.
The Velobala Group is supported by the WK Kellogg Foundation and assisted by Department of Fine Art, Durban University of Technology
