Beaded Sling Bags Training Project
Thembelihle Sibiya This development project aimed at providing relevant beading and design skills to a group of 8 crafters with the aim of educating and providing an employment opportunity for them. Leonie Malherbe, specialist embroider was invited to work with and mentor a group of eight crafters over a period of five days. Thembelihle designing her bag Ntokozo and Hlengiwe beading the bags Participants were introduced to bag-making skills and to decorating the bags with an assortment of beads in a variety of shapes, colours and texture. The participants were encouraged to combine geometric Zulu design which they sourced from traditional Zulu beadwork and Ilala Palm baskets patterns and designs. The products created featured a combination of both traditional and contemporary design trends. Xolile Ndlovu 40 beaded bags were completed by the end of the project and were exhibited at the Celebrating Craft exhibition on 21 April 2010.
