An exhibition of new paintings by Bheki Khambule will be opened by Jenny Stretton, acting Director of the Durban Art Gallery, at the African Art Centre on Thursday 20 July 2010.

Khambule’s work is inspired by his environment, focussing on the people and cultures that are a product of that environment. The new acrylic paintings reflect Khambule’s interest in urban spaces and the related issues of cultural hybridity and identity.

Clive Sithole, a renowned KwaZulu Natal ceramic potter, facilitated a skills training workshop from which 14 young upcoming ceramicists were trained in the duration of three weeks (15 days). The workshop was aimed at teaching contemporary methods and techniques of ceramic making and at expanding the tradition of ceramic pottery in KwaZulu Natal.  This project also provided a platform through which Clive Sithole could showcase his mastery through passing his pottery making skills to young artists.

The project focused on teaching basic ceramic pottery making skills as well as professional mould making, designing, glazing and firing skills. A variety of ceramic products from cups, plates to intricate ceramic pieces such  as teapots and meat platters were produced by the group.
